Combination of Cells

To increase the potential difference or the time of flow of current cells are used in combination. There are two types of combinations

1. Series Combination

2. Parallel Combination

Series Combination:

In this combination the positive terminal of one cell is connected  to the negative terminal of the second cell and the positive terminal of second cell is connected  to the negative terminal of the third cell and the process continues. In this type of combination the resultant potential difference is equal to the sum of potential difference of the individual cells. This type of arrangement is used to increase the potential difference.

Parallel Combination:

In this combination the positive terminal of one cell is connected to the positive terminal of the second cell and the negative terminal of one cell is connected  to the negative terminal of the other cell and the process continues. In this type of combination the resultant potential difference is equal to the potential difference of the individual cells but the time for which the current will flow through the circuit increases.  This type of arrangement is used to increase the time duration of the circuit.
